* We are busy digging potatoes and storing them in the bulk potato storage (which is part of the room we wash them in). The field across the road from the store is all done and it yielded well. The field on Two Rod Road was planted a bit later and the soil is dryer and more gravelly in texture. The timing of the very dry weather hit right when the potatoes needed moisture the most to size up and they did not get it in time, so please forgive us for the average size being smaller on this field.
* The news from the grain part of our farm is that in the relatively dry weather a few days ago we started combining our organic corn. This is not sweet corn or popcorn; it is dry yellow corn which the big green combine snaps off of the stalk and then rips the kernels off of the cob. After harvest, we haul big truck loads of it back to the grain dryer, where it is dried (it smells delicious while drying) and then stored in those shiny silver grain bins you see just down the driveway from the dairy barn. The corn needs to dry down to 14 percent moisture in order to store properly. Once again, due to the stress on the corn plants due to drought, yields are lower and the moisture is higher than we would like: about 30 percent moisture. This means we have to spend more money on propane to dry it down. It will be used to grind and make organic livestock feed for our livestock and sold to other organic farms as well.
* We have also been busy with our blueberries. I have been planting about 400 baby bushes in any spot in any of our blueberry fields that is missing a blueberry, to fill them all in. My son Abe has been applying wood chip mulch and in the picture below my grandson Noah is weed whacking between the bushes before the mulch is applied. The bushes have beautiful red leaves that compete with the trees for gorgeous fall colors.

Sadly, we do not have thanksgiving turkeys this year, but we plan to raise them again next year!
